What are the symptoms of a timing belt going out?

Asked by branchr3 Aug 20, 2007 at 11:21 AM about the 2001 Toyota Highlander

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My truck was idiling and all of a sudden it cutoff. I bought a new fuel pump and installed it, but it still does not start. I also switched out my relay switch, but to no avail. Can some one give me some info as to what the problem might be.

Well from working at toyota you would need a new timing belt if you turn the key and its cranking really fast but not turning over. If its not turning over at all then worst case would be a new engine

Had a timing belt go out on me in my 350 in my boat in the middle of a lake once... When it goes, there will be a loud bang (I was afraid that I had blown the motor). Then, it generally just cranks like normal, but doesn't fire.
