Is the warrenty transferable to another owner?

Asked by Rox Jul 09, 2008 at 01:07 PM about the 2001 Toyota Prius

Question type: Shopping & Pricing

I'm looking at 2001 Prius to buy. It only has just over 20,000 miles on it. I understand from reading your web site that it has a warrenty covering the car up to 37,000 miles. Is this warrenty transferable? If so what does it cover? Would I have to take it to a dealer to fulfill the warrenty?

thank you

Depends on the person or dealer your buying it from. The car your looking for is a 2001 model, most car makers only offer around 2 to 4 years of warranty so the warranty may no longer apply to the vehicle. If you do want a warranty for sure, then buy from a dealership and ask them about getting a full warranty for the vehicle. They should be able to help you out, if not, I don't know what to tell ya. P.s..... Toyota Prius is a Hybrid vehicle, keep in mind that the battery alone costs 1,200 and weights 250 lbs. So def. get a warranty.

Jese is right on the warranty part but I work for Toyota and wanted to also let you your looking into a prius which is also a very hard car to find. As of right now most dealerships have a waiting list of about 5-6months on that car. so if you really want one make sure u have a few choices of colors and know what package you want. Maint. is also expensive on that veh. try to buy from a dealership that would offer free oil changes. :)

All Toyota warranties are transferable. But that being said, there are stipulations.1.) On the warranty (comes with the car as a new purchase)-- it is either 3 years or 36,000 miles as a basic; 5 years or 60,000 miles for powertrain, airbags and rust protection. 8 year or 100,000 for the battery and hybrid systems EXCEPT IN CALIFORNIA where it is 10 years/ 150,000. Wow. 2). The warranty cannot be voided out due to bad maintenance or aftermarket tampering such as installing secondary electrical systems. You should see if it is a warranty (new car warranty); or Toyota Certified warranty; or Toyota vehicle service agreement (add on or so-called extended warranty). These terms all mean different things and have different conditions. I don't know what is covered... because I don't know what kind of "warranty" you have.... terms like gold or platinum also make a difference. Finally, yes... you would have to take it to a dealer/ Toyota dealer to fulfill the warranty. If it is an aftermarker product... there may be other stipulations.

A 2001 warranty even at 10 years would only be covered till 2011. It is an either OR situation. Whatever comes first the years OR the miles. In this case the years came first and have voided the warranties! From what I have read the car is too old to be covered under an extended warranty that you could purchase directly from Toyota! So to answer your question , there is NO WARRANTY TO TRANSFER AT THIS POINT IN TIME.
