What would make my brakes really hard to press down?

Could be that you've worn out the brake shoe and they need to be replaced immediately. You could also have damaged the rotors, which may also need to be replaced. Have it checked out asap. Many shops will give a free brake inspection. Go with a brand name.

a hard brake peddle is due to lack of vacuum,check the various hoses to the servo and from the vacuum pump!!!
