1993 toyota camry stalls and turns off when placed in gear

my car started stalling and turns off when I put it in gear. I have replaced spark plugs and
wires. I also removed intake hose and cleaned throttle. I checked vacuum hoses and did
find a few that were slit so I cut that portion off. What more can I check? I was jipped by a
mechanic who I payed $400 for a tune up (mind you I am on limited income so that was
hard) only to now be finding out stuff was not replaced. I am a novice so please be patient
