how many 1966 L78 Chevelles were made?

Hello, While a surprising 72,272 1966 Chevelles SS 396's were produced, fewer than 100 had the mid-year release L78 engine. These cars could go 0-60 in 6.5 seconds, hitting 375 horsepower at 5600 rpm. Woah. CarGrrl

WRONG!!! Chevrolet produced 3099 L78 powered Chevelles during the 1966 model year (yes, over 3000). These included SuperSport convertibles and hardtops, as well as El caminos. Chevrolet does not have a breakdown of how many went into which bodystyle, still, estimates (not just guesses) indicate over 200 L78 convertibles (but no one knows for sure). Chevrolet not only has this information on how many "Chevelles" came with the L78 option, but the Tonawanda Engine assembly facility also has records of how many engines were produce, broken down into specific applications (such as the EG-coded L78 for 1966 Chevelles/Elco...).
I DON'T KNOW BUT I HAD A BLUE/BLK VINYL VER. It turned 12.51 best at US 30 outside Chicago in 1967. I bought it from a car salesman for $3,000-with 5,500 miles on it! I was 16! I remember the first ride I had in that car. It gave me a sensation i wasn't to again experience until I drove the Cadillac CTS-V last year! I swear- they both distorted my vision, Star Wars-style. Everything V-ed in, like the warp effect!

I had a 66 Chevelle SS 396. Once I got it up to 150MPH with room to faster on old HY 14 going over the pass to Lancaster. My speedometer only went up to 130 but I knew I was going 150 because my friend was behind me with a Camero Z28 that had a speedometer that went to 160 & he we went that fast. Our cars were about as fast as each other, but even though his was faster factory mine was souped up and his was stock.
Must of had a 2:73 gear and over drive
