Hey 70W30 ... Here's a great thread I found on the subject that you will enjoy (link below). The summary (Spoiler Alert!!!)is that it's much the same as alien life ... there's the possibility that an automatic 1969 Z28 from the factory exists because Chevy seemed willing to make "special orders" but there is no documentation that they ever did make one and no one have been able to produce a true factory 1969 Z28 with a factory automatic ... If you have one, you should be on tour ... Hope that helps! http://groups.google.com/group/alt.autos.camaro.firebird/browse_thread/thread/4ffbccf8fdbd8d4c/1dedad5e951b2d47?lnk=st&q=69+Z+28+Camaros+automatic+&rnum=1&hl=en#1dedad5e951b2d47

I don't think it's likely that there was an automatic transmission option for the 1969 Z-28. At that time, the "Z-28" designation still mainly referred to an engine option, that high revving 302 cid small block. Horsepower was rated at 290 at 5,800 rpms, and I think this figure was realistic, for once. General Motors then-standard transmissions generally didn't perform very well with high-rpm engines like this, preferring engine speeds of 5200 rpm and less.

No 302 Z/28 cars ever had an automatic transmission. They did offer an automatic in 1970 cars with the 360 horse 350 Z/28, but never on the 1967 - 1969 Z/28 cars with a 302. A manual transmission was MANDATORY, and no automatic was offered when you ordered the Special High Performance Package option "Z/28"

I'm watching motor trend and they have a 69 Z28 with a autatic. They can't find the reverse light switch. I'm wondering if the hole in the floor is factory or someone cut it in. What a mystery. I can't wait to see what they figure out.

then it is not factory. the 302 dz motor would shut down if it was automatic. it had somethi9ng to do with the rpms the 302 dz motor would not stay running with an automatic trans in those years. the torque converters they had had something to do with the shut down issue.this is a fact
