NAstyz28.com has pretty much any information you want to know about the second-gen Camaros. Here is the info on that year http://www.nastyz28.com/camaro/camaro79.php They don't list 0-60 or quarter mile times though. One site I found said that a stock one has an estimated 0-60 time of 8.7 seconds and a 1/4 mile time of 17.5 seconds @ 82.0 mph.
basically all you need to know is that these cars and the 6.6L trans ams were dogs. huge engines and no real output with stock motors. its going to take a lot fo upgrades (not just bolt ons) to make these 350s and 400s roar. engines swaps with crate motors is the best option. otherwise the car will just get flat out spanked by any other muscle car on the road.
lol its a 350 port the heads, 3 angle valve job, get a nice intake and carb, diff cam and put some gear in it. 350 same as any other just some money
a 5.7 camaro is far from a dog.... you can achieve 300hp from a 350 with bolt ons and MUCH more with internal work... and what crate motor? a crate 350, 383 stroker? guess what, you can make your stock motor perform on par with any crate motor for the same price or less, just alittle more work and know how involved, instead of having someone do all the hard work for you and you just bolting it in.
Next time do your homework before coming in here. A 1979 5.7L 350 is a 190 hp engine stock. Care to retype your last response? ??? I'd sure hope so
Wait wait my bad they did have a 220hp version too. Ooooooo so fast. Like I saidthey were dogs stock. And there is no way you're going to get 80-100 hp out of bolt ons. It's just not happening. So like I said go get a crate motor. It's the easiest and best option for these cars. And what crate motor a person gets is their choice. All depends what they want to use the car for.
If you can take YOUR motor out and take it apart and have a Good machine shop clean bore the block!and start there building it up, Your going to get the most gain from a good set of heads and a nice roller cam!If you do it little by little you can spend money as you make it. Its hard to drop 5,6,7,8 grand on a crate motor, and also you 79 350 block is better that new gm stuff, unless its a bowtie block and thats $1500 alone, All of this if you have another car. aftermarket heads is going to be the best bang for the buck.Airflow research and brodix make nice heads for around $1200. Ive built a lot of small blocks, From 1984 up the blocks are crap. They twist killing #2 and #3 cam bearings. Have fun with your car there less of them everyday.
My chilton's manual said az28 had 225hp.
I had 4spd with 3:73 headers and edelbrock intake the rest was stock 15.3@93
Now I have only been building these cars for the last 20 years or so, but from my experience, a good set of heads, an intake, cam, carb and headers really wake these low hp engines up. Run true duals with out cats, and a good set of gears out back and hold on.... Now if you really want to go fast, skip the gen1 create engine and go with a LS... Even a 4.8 or 5.3 truck engine will run well in one. I like the aluminum blocks. A V6 or of the new Camaro is a swap idea I have kicked around. Just can't bring myself to putting a V6 in a Z28 even if it does make 323hp
I have a 79 chevy 350 rebuilt with aluminum heads, intake, pistons making 9.3 compression with holley 650. it does have roller cam., This stock 175hp is now 425 hp to flywheel. Intake and heads will help a lot.
I have a 1980 z28 good moter The thing is. No bolt on. Or aftermarket Parts would improve horsepower Had to rebuild the homeowner Cam Blueprint hands Long to hunters Definitely no converters Holly 680 cafb Approximately cost 8000 Now they're motor is no dog by far Puts out 425. H p. Just have to do the rear of the transmission Takes money but it can be done Thanks
About this how about this guy's I got a 78 RS SS Camaro 350 300 horse block taking 2000 phase 3 bowtie heads intake fuel injection put them together will it run. They both up GM said it wouldn't help me out Gearheads
wait can u put a new gen camaro engine 6.2L v8 in a old z28? Plz reply
I have a 1979 camaro z28 with t tops. My dream car. And it has a 350 putting out 425 to 450hp. It is bored 32 over with forged aluminum pistons and aluminum heads with a 270h comp cam edelbrock high rise intake and a edelbrock 750cfm carb. Hydraulic roller rockers and titanium tds push rods. I love these cars and always wanted on. Mine was set up for a drag strip as we had one in my home town. But they tore it out to make a jail. There is probably 10 grand between my engine transmission and rear end. Don't really like ,your locker rear end as I drive it around town but what do you do. Happy building guys
hi i got z28 350 engine and box can i fit carb and a disse thanks
My stock 79 z28 upgraded a few things...holly 750 carb torker2 intake...hooker headers...flowmasters 40 ..msd redbox ignition removed cpu..hei super coil..blue max sparkplug wires ..platinum plugs....she runs sweet til this day!!! I can take a 5.0 no problem
There never was a 220 hp version of the Z28.78,79 made 185 h.p and 80 and 81 air induction cars made 190 h.p. 80auromatic had 3.42 gears and 81 had 3.08 gears .

Yes you got it right. A 1979 Z28 Camaro stock 185 horsepower with a 4 Barrell Rochester carb, 342 stock gear automatic. They weigh 3700lbs. With a full tank of gas.I believe it had a 18 gallon tank. If I remember correctly the most fun was downshifting from a 45mph punch. The cars true Power band. And believe me it was a great punch. I still have the car in mint shape and unfortunately in and out of storage since October 15, 1993 when the Mustang craz hit with the 5.0. This may be the year it comes out of storage. Oh one other thing...my neighbors hated me because I had expensive headers on it ( can't recall the name ) no cats with Hush Thrush Cherry Bombsfor exhaust. Remember this is almost 30+ years so the exhaust name I believe is correct. Anyhow these cars looked awesome and its only fault is power.
my stock 79 4spd 79 z28 ran consistently 14.75 quarter mile runs. don't remember speed. this was in 1984/85
