I know this sounds strange. I purchased a 79 z28. It was the 2nd owner/ bought it off his friend(1st owner). I immediately noticed that it had air induction hood! (80/81). When asked why ,

Asked by Weezl67 Sep 29, 2015 at 06:46 AM about the 1979 Chevrolet Camaro

Question type: General

It didn't have the Stinger hood, here
was my reply. It was one of the last
few 79's on production line. They ran
out of stinger hoods/ so put on 80 air
induction hood. Supposedly there
were about 200 of them. I know this
sounds like a great story. The man
was in his 70's. I don't see why he
would make that up? The car has
59k and nothing has been touched.
The activation mechanism on pedal
looks perfect. The wiring is all in the
loom. If someone has faked this,
they went threw a ton of work.
Could this be possible? Or was I sold
a story to make it sound more
mysterious.  Any help would be
appreciated. Thanks.

I've heard stranger. I bought a 78 subrban from the original owners son. Had everything documented, original 350 was blown and I intended to replace it. When I took it out we ran some numbers and looked at it and it actually had a chevy 302 in it. Yes a 302, not a typo and I didn't mean 305. The vin and all paper work said it had a 350

Check out this site. http://www.nastyz28.com/camaro/camaro79.html Send these guys and email. They should be able to tell you if it's fact or fiction. Is your air induction hood a functional hood or just a decorative hood scoop? In this article, it states that the '79 was equipped with a decorative hood scoop. http://beforeitsnews.com/motor-junkies/2014/02/retro-review- 1980-81-z28-camaro-2488048.html

The reality is, neither one of you know the answer. That's ok. I didn't expect this to be that easy. Thanks for the idea of nastyz28. But, I emailed him last week& never got a reply. Thanks for trying.

I'm afraid the only way you will be able to verify the story is either through a Chevy historian or by someone who worked at the factory. It's such a small number of cars that were supposedly outfitted with the hoods, it is either a hushed up fact or just some sales pitch lore. As you know, everyone has swapped hoods over the years. It would be almost impossible to verify because hoods aren't serial numbered with the rest of the car. Even if the story is true, it would be just about impossible to verify that it's the hood from the factory. Unless it's the original paint and you could have the hood removed and look under the hinges for the original primer or bare metal. You would have to do some serious CSI investigating to prove it's originality. Even if true, would it increase the value? Especially since everyone has mixed and matched hoods over the years?

Thanks so much. Don't think it increases value. I just don't want to tell people that story, when asked why a 79 has a 80 hood.
