dont waste your time with a 305, go with a 350. you could up grade the tranny to a 4 speed . and also beef up the rear end. there are many places to find used parts for this set up.

If your looking for pure power then the UPGRADE to a V8 is the way to go. Your cost on a good strong V8, Trans, driveshaft and rear-end replacement will be less than just upgrading the V6 to the power level you most likely want. You will have to check the laws in your local state but most likely you will be required to meet the specs for 1980. Yes you can get excellent power from the 229/231. If you add twin turbos ! The V6 is originally a Buick Motor, which at one point were Aluminum Blocks (which are crap) GM sold the surplus of Alum V6's to Land Rover and you will find them in the Discovery I & II. When dealing with older cars try and stay with SB Motor Chevy/Ford/Mopar(Magnum Motor) that have parts readily available .... exotic stuff is sweet but unless you have time and money to chase and pay for parts .... final outcome will be a money pit. And thats provided you can provide free labor. The picture is a 383 stroker -- 498HP 524ftlbs all built for 5k including labor. If you need help with specs let me know. Best of luck, Mike
