you probably have a bad starter roll under it and check the wire that goes from the solenoid to the points in the starter. They conmanly rot off in these models.

well now that gear issues have come into the mix i would have to say you most likely have a bad trany. the other thing could be a bad shifter lever on the side of the transmission if the car has sat for a while it can happen some times. Crawl under the car and find the lever that shifts the trany into gear and spray it with wd 40 if it does not move freely(be sure to have the e brake on if your using ramps or a jack so it does not roll away since youll be under it.

Such a pity because the gears ran smoothe as infact thats what i loved about it...yea i had a guy strip it down and climb underneath...he said their was a kink in the rod but it wont budge. The initial problem was starting it..It locked in park and a person forced it out of park and then got it into 2/3rd gear and wont go bk into park...so nw two problems to troubleshoot...the guy reckons its not broken...bt yea thnx for ur help

well if the linkage is bent just straighten it back out lube up the lever and you should be alright. To help and see if the trany is engaging properly remove the linkage bar and use a pair of vice-grips to move the transmission in and out of gears to get the pin freed up again. This happened with an old 1990 audi i had bought a while back and its all i had to do to fix the shifting issues.
