Boss 302

Dear mfinn-- Ford's Boss 302 engine was specirfically built by Ford as a reaction to a Chevy Camaro winning the 1968 Trans-Am racing series. It was put into production Mustangs in 1969 and 1970 only, therefore your 1968 Mustang did not come with that engine. Hints in determing if your engine is a transpanted Boss 302 are screw in freeze plugs on the side of the block, wide heads and a very wide intake manifold. Good luck from Bovan.

In addition to the valve covers being wide, they will also have a natural aluminum finish, say Boss 302 on the side in blue and have small fins accross the top. The Boss 302 Registry can provide you valuable additional info.

Aso running your VIN will help you decode the car. It will tell you exactly how the car originally came from the factory.

My guess would be NO. Don't go by stickers, check block #'s Ford did not put that motor in, but someone else may have?

they are all right i dont know much about the cars my self but i just bought a 1977 mustang cobra with a boss 302 engine and every thing they said about it is true. all the parts and things said to look at are right. another way if you still cant figure it out is to just take it to a mechanic and ask them. every once in a while you will find a mechanic that does not want to work on them. so it will be a good thing to learn about youre car and how to work on them. my dad is a mechanic and there are cars he dont like to work on. and me myself i like only on cars with carborators and nothing else. if its fuel injected i will not touch it. ill stick to the older clasic cars.i didnt even like my jetta cause it was fuel injected.

FUEL INJECTED MEANS ALOT OF MOVING PARTS THAT CAN & WILL STOP MOVING!!! ME I'M WITH THE GUY WHO POSTED THE ABOVE. FUEL INJECTIOIN, ELECTRONIC IGNITION, SMOG CONTROL DEVICES, & ALL THAT STUFF IS CRAP!!!!! I'LL TAKE A SMALL BLOCK WITH A CAM AND THREE DUECES TO "GO"!!!!! THANK YOU.

i can only do work with carb. never juil injected. i think we should get rid of all fuil injected parts and go back to the older clasic pars. cars now and days just get more expensive and built cheaper so they can get more cars built and earn more money. all the older cars are built with good strong parts. i realy want all fuil injectors out of this world. the only thing thats going to happen is they are going to keep building cars and charge more money. sooner or later the only people who can aford a car will be those who are filthy rich. especaly with this econimy

i had a police officer come and do a title check on my car. he thought it had a little v6 in the mustang like all the other ones that he had seen. he said thats the bigetst engine he has ever seen in a stang. be fore he left i asked himif my mustang could out run his patrol car. he said yes but it cant out run my radio. all and all i have a hot and ready car now to hit thee streets and mob around

There is another way of checking if it is a BOSS,or not(besides the valve covers).Pull a valve cover,and LOOK-if the valves,are even(in line)It"s a windsor..If they are staggered(canted) It is-#1,a 351 cleveland#2,351 midland(not good) #3,a 302,with a cleveland head transplant(not common,but,a cool way to hop up a 302,in the 80"s),OR you have an engine-Real BOSS302,that far exceeds the worth,of your current mustang!! If real,,Sell that PUPPY,and build a ford engine,of your dreams!! Easily done,after selling a genuine BOSS 302!!!

@ M Boyett-That Officer,obviously,hasnt looked under the hood,of many mustangs!! I bet,my 68 fast back,with the 428 Cobra-Jet,would Knock his socks off!!

The only way to tell if it's a real BOSS block is by the casting number. '69s have C8FE-6015-B. During model change some had D0ZE-6015-B which was a '70 part number. Some '70 blocks were also D0ZE-6015-C blocks. This casting number can be seen behind the starter on the block. Screw in freeze plugs is also a giveaway.
