air conditioning freezes, stopping air flow into cabin

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 2006 Expedition and when I drive with the a/c on at the coldest setting and the fan on the lowest or next to lowest setting, the a/c unit under the dash freezes and blocks the air from blowing through the vents. When on the highest setting and highest fan setting, the unit does not freeze, just the occupants in the cabin!!! What do I need to do fix it?

Try raising the temperature and turn the system to Max or Recirc. That will recirculate the cabin air which will have a lower humidity. Humidity in the air is condensing on the coil and causing the blockage.

the properties of refrigeration, too much refrigerant (overcharged) reduces the effective cooling undercharged, or loss of refrigerant=icing.

need to get a charge and the filter/drier changed too~
Could avoid doing that setting. Turn the thermostat setting down a couple and run the darn fan higher, after all you just paid for the extra gas to run that a.c. It could be a bad thermostat so it is not cycling at all.
I have to tell you, "TENSPEED" gave you the right answer. I have had similar problems on three cars and that corrected it every time.
i agree with tennisshoe if the low pressure switch does not cut the compresser off then it will cause the evap. core to freeze up. i have also seen the evap. core drain be stopped up and the condensation cannot get out and casue a blockage issue.

...in any event change the filters and spend a little money on this~
