On the inside handle, look up underneath the handle, can you see the cable end coming out of door and where it connects to the handle? That is usually where a lot of door handles break. If it is broken there, try and grab the cable end with pliers and pull it to open door. Older door handles used a solid metal rod to connect handles to the lock mechanism, newer handles use a sleeved cable (like a brake cable on a bike).
