Sliding door fell off-anyone else having this issue?
Asked by spidersmouse Feb 19, 2010 at 06:15 PM about the 2007 Honda Odyssey
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
There was a grinding noise which started on our driver side power sliding door a couple days ago, then today, when opening, it fell off the track causing substantial body damage. The dealer said the center roller broke, and the other side is also worn out. The van is only 2 years old, but at 40K out of warranty, and the fix without the body work will be $400. When I asked if this is a part which I can look forward to replacing every two years, I didn't get much assurance it wouldn't. Anone else having this problem?

I have a 2005 and our door fell off too! It is an obvious manufacture problem. We were in am support parking lot about to catch a flight! They van was in excellent condition but as you said, there is much body damage now.
Spell guesser strikes again. That should say we were in an airport parking lot, about to catch a flight.

I had a 2008 Odyssey and the driver side door fell off in 2011. It was all the way open and then fell out of the track and left three "Wolverine" claw marks down the side of the body. And of course it was about 6 months out of warranty when it happened. I was on Vacation 8 hours away from home and the dealer I took it to made it sound like a common problem, "we tend to keep those parts in stock" I dumped the Van and took a loss, I was pissed.

I forgot to mention that I had the grinding noise too, but every time I took it in to the dealer they told me that it was a kids toy, dirt or grime or they didn't find anything wrong. The Fix without the body damage was about $500 for me. The body work they wanted about 3-4k.
Had a 2008 where I heard the grinding noise described and the door fell off -- warranty repair. Turned that in last month for another -- a 2012 Odyssey and door just fell off -- no noise, just came off the track less than 2 mos old. Very frustrating.
2010 van, 70,000 miles and the door partially closes then bounces back - says its the roller - grrrrrrr $210/door (only getting one done now)

We have a 2014 Odyssey Braun wheelchair conversion van that we have owned for 7 months and have 5,000 miles on the odometer. This evening, the sliding door on the passenger side fell off, leaving our quadriplegic daughter and her friend stranded. $70K wheelchair van and Honda can't make a door that will stay on the vehicle? Dented and scraped the the side of the van, too. Unbelievable!
The door of my 2014 Honda Odyessy has fallen off twice! All I can say is that I am thankful that I am leasing the vehicle because when the lease is up, I am done!
Sooooo, I have heard this grinding noise on any number of occasions with our 2011 Odyssey and I always assumed it was road sand/grit that had gotten in between the track and the roller (we live in the North East and for some reason I always seem to be more in-tune with it after rain storms/lots of snow melting). I just heard about this being a known defect by Honda and had I known sooner I would have brought it in well within the warranty period (which of course, ran out just under a year ago). My question is, does Honda need to honor a repair for a known defect at no charge, even if the warranty period has expired?
Our 2010 Odyssey side door didn't want to close automatically so I tried to manually close it. I heard a grinding noise and the door fell off. It was hanging by a very thin cable. I was afraid that the cable would break and the door would damage another car or hurt someone. We were stranded in 25 degree weather for hours. When we talked to the Honda rep he told me it was my fault for trying to shut the door!! We have owned other vans and know things can break but never did I imagine Honda would make a van where the door would come off with so little effort.
My son & daughter in law have a 2010 Honda Odyssey touring. The door fell off and has caused tremendous damage to the car. Thankfully, my 3 & 4 year old grandsons did not open the power door. It fell on my son, but he was able to support the weight. It would have crushed my grandsons.
2010 LX and the driver side sliding door fell off this Sunday. Lots of damage to the siding. I had it in years ago when it started making grinding noises and they said it was plastic bearings and they have to replace to whole part, which cost $250. I refused to pay that kind of cash because Honda put a $0.50 part on a $34,000 minivan. I should have gotten around to writing the manufacturer and asking them to fix their terrible design. This is the 2nd Odyssey that had a door go bad. Now I guess I'm just going to stay away from Honda. Nice engine. Crappy other parts, I guess.
If anyone else has this problem, PLEASE report it on the NHTSA's website. We have this problem and it is a major safety issue. The Toyota Sienna had the same problem with their automatic doors and they did a recall, but Honda has not yet done the right thing. Please take the time to report it. The NHTSA cannot investigate a problem that goes unreported, and the more reports they get the more seriously they have to take the problem. Door fell off of my 2010 Odyssey. Honda told me they're not responsible for Hondas. I KID YOU NOT. https://iliedimahotmess.blogspot.com/?m=1
I have a 2016 Chrysler Town and Country wheelchair van and the top part of the drivers side sliding door came off. I have no idea what to do or how to even get it anywhere for repair.
I have 2007 honda odyssey and the door fell off. I have also heard the loud grinding noise. My 3 year old was sitting in her carseat next to the door when it fell off. HOW SCARY!!! Why hasn't there been a recall for this issue. I thought I was the only one, but to hear of so many complaints is ridiculous. There's damage to the body of my van, it's so ugly to look at. I'm so disgusted by Honda lack of care.
has anyone called the Honda Corporate office?
My son & daughter in law have a 2012 Honda Odyssey. The door fell off and has also damage the car. Thankfully, their 3 year old and their two year old twins were belted in their seats and the car was still in their garage. it was zero degrees outside. Honda asked them to drive the car into the dealership and said he should rent a car. They would not give them a loaner nor drive them to the rent a car. At first they were told they didn't have a warranty and had to pay for the rented car, the parts and labor to fix the door. When they found their warranty it was still in effect. The warranty covered the rental car, parts and labor but would not take responsibility for the damage to the car that was done due to the door falling off. Honda corporate said the warranty was a third party, which was purchased at Honda and the car was not certified which again was purchased at Honda. Are we all imagining this problem??? Why isn't Honda taking responsibility for a fault in their car? We are a family of Honda owners, but I will tell you that this is the last Honda in our family.... No more Hondas...
PLEASE report this problem with your Odyssey on the NHTSA's website. The more reports they get the more seriously they have to take the problem. Thank you! https://www- odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/
Just bought a 2009 Odyssey, the door closed on my daughter and ripped her handband off her head and she managed to get back in the van before being seriously injured. It continued to close even after hitting her. The door gets stuck open and sometimes it gets stuck while opening and will close itself. The Honda dealer said it's not their concern that the car has to be safe and fixing the door wasn't part of that. Now we have to spend a ton of money to fix the broken door. Please report this issue to NHTSA before someone else gets hurt!!!!
Same thing happened to me this weekend with the driver side door on my 2008 Odyssey. Door was hanging by the cable. Called Honda and they said I was out of warranty(duh), there is no recall currently, need to report it to the NHTSA as others have stated. This is apparently how Honda measures whether or not a recall is warranted, that or a major lawsuit I suppose. So please, all of you register your complaints. I was told that if a recall is issued, you will be entitled to a reimbursement if you have your receipt.
Same thing with my 2005 odyssey. Sliding door on drivers side kept opening and closing the sensor light would blink on and off than my battery kept draining . I researched and learned because of the faulty door it drains your battery Took the fuse out and it saved the batter. A few days later. The other sliding door FELL OFF and was hanging by the thin cable With help I managed to rig it enough to get to the dealership. Of course they could fix it for around 800 bucks. I asked about a recall. And they practically laughed in my face they managed to secure the slider but said it’s not safe. And that’s true because it fell off again while parked in my driveway. It’s completly wrong how Honda will not take responsibility for this crappy design. I drove Honda Accord for 14 years. 300,000 miles Loved that car. !! Except for the wheel well rusting Issues. After Two kids -thought why not an odyssey. Seriously a mini van is about the room and the SLIDING DOORS ! Is Honda crazy ??

OK so we all have the same problem, but what is the fix? I keep seeing people say how much, but what did they do, what did they replace? I have a 2015 Odyssey with only 17K miles.
Same thing happened to me today. 2008 Odyssey I bought 8 months ago from a friend, so def no warranty. My 10 year old son had to help me unplug and unbolt the door. Thankfully we were at home when it happened. Looking for a fix. Can someone post a link on how to replace the door. I think I know what parts I need to replace, but a you tube video or something would be helpful.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwgL5Oo8rXw
Step by step for Barry. It's only fleeting me upload 1 photo each post??
So the first step to reattach was to unbolt the bottom rollers from the door (2 - 12mm bolts) get the rollers in and lined up.
2nd get the center rollers back in this was the original problem and why the door fell off. The above video shows how to do it. I had a diaper on there because it was the first thing I grabbed on the van to try to protect the paint from further damage.
3rd step was to unbolt the top roller and get the roller on the top track. Now all the rollers are in. It was me, my husband, and our 10 year old lifting and holding and jacking up to get all the bolts lined up and back in. We also had to use a car jack, a jack stand and a log LOL
Lining the door back up to bolt back to the car. It was just 2 bolts each on the top, middle and bottom rollers
Plugging all the electronics back. Those plugs slide onto the door towards the front or back.
This was the reason it broke. No rollers at all on the center roller. (The track the rolled in was a bit warped in places and we carefully hammered them to straighten it back)
This is the new one and what it's supposed to look like (part was $30 on Amazon)
Door works fine now. Way better than before. Total damage was these scratches Now I just need to fix the passenger door that's doing the stupid not opening at all shit. Even when I disconnect battery. It'll work once or twice then the "slide door" light turns on and wont open again
Here's a better picture of that first step (lining up the rollers while detached from the door) Way easier to unbolt the rollers and get them lined up then lift the door to reattach.
I have a 2004 my boyfriend got it used a few months back because it was supposed to be such an awesome vehicle with little to no issues. Last night the automatic door on the driver side wouldnt work so when using that side last night i switch the automatic to off and used it manually without any issues this morning went to do the same thing and the door only opened halfway and then quit and wouldn't shut all the way. I got it shut enough to get the kids to my moms so that i could leave for work and decided to try to shut it one more time and thats when it came off track and was just hanging there. So I'm stuck no money until next Friday at the earliest and no idea what im going ti do finally I got the idea and i took the bolts out of the tract piece and got it back into the track and rebolted it. I dont think it will stay when using that door but until I'm able to fix it looks like the kids are just going to have to deal with only having one door back there

Yep, happened to our van as well. Sounds like Honda should recall or at least FIX this problem going forward.
Yep I was screaming for my spouse to come help me because it was just hanging there by two cables hurt my arm and scrached the hell out of my van this is not the first time and the drivers side is compleatly out of use idk what wrong with it come on honda we thought you made better then that!
Sounds like a recall to me what do you all say do you enjoy paying to have your door fixed every 3000 miles what if you child gets under that heavy door because not only does it come off in the middle the top roller comes off I jacked up the whole side of my van trying to stop it from falling on me this is crazy someone should be held accountable thank you
This just happened to my 2005 Odyssey Touring. I am so mad at Honda for being so irresponsible and not taking any action to fix their faulty product. Im Going in to the dealership to be raped for the repair next week. Thanks so much Honda.

so this just happened to me right now on our 2005 odessey. we’ve had problems with the right side door. the door doesn’t open all the way on its own. we have to take the fuse out & put it back in for it to open all the way. so today we did that & went to close the door & the damn thing fell off. it scratched the car so much. taking it to honda now to see what happens. ugh

I finally got mine fixed - my van was modified by Braun for a wheelchair lift. When they did that, they made the rail longer so it would open all the way (further than a normal van door) to allow for the ramp and for the wheelchair to get through the door. The part they added on broke and would drop the door, but then pop back into place so it looked normal. It took me months to figure it out. To their credit, Braun replaced the rail even though the van was out of warranty. The door still didn't work and Honda charged me 2K replacing everything they could, but it still did not work. A few months later I figured that one out too, the door stop at the top was slightly too long. I screwed it in and it has worked ever since. The thing that bugs me is that neither Braun nor Honda could figure out what was wrong in either case, but I managed to do it and I am not a mechanic. So if you read this far, my only suggestion is that you check to see if there is a rail extension or stop at the end of the rail on the van. I am talking about the rail in the middle of the door that it slides open on. The door might be popping out of the end of the rail.
Thank you for sharing. I have a 2013 Odyssey with the Braun conversation package. The ramp door just completely fell off and damaged the side of the can. No warning at all. I will take the van to the Baun dealer first. I'm beyond frustrated with the Braun as I keep having expensive repairs for the ramp. I've already replaced the ramp's motor twice at $1800 each time and it needs another motor right now!
I was just about to purchase a 2010 Odyssey, with only 156K mile son it BUT the back passenger sliding window will not work, the passenger from window will not roll down as the back windows will not roll down either. The Van drive fabulous A.C great all good except this "windows / ELECTICAL issue (ow windows not even trying to work. EXPERIENCE tells me to not just walk away form this purchase but RUN from it. I could purchase for $3.5K the new 2021 version costs over $40K THANKS to all who spoke out on this site you saved me $3.5K

2008 odyssey, door would only close halfway. when I pushed it hard, the rusty door track roller rivets broke and the door fell off, breaking the rear window and scratching the paint

2008 Honda Odyssey at Pearson Airport departures. Picking up my brother and family from England in torrential rains this August. Thankfully my brother caught the door, and then he and I were able to partially replace the roller and use straps to secure the door to the roof racks. We had to drive two hours home very slowly and with rain coming in the whole way. My husband and I were able to buy a new roller assembly and fix it ourselves for about $40, but what a nightmare! And we were lucky!!!
