can u set distributor timing on a 97 chevy 5.7 without a scan tool?

ive set no.1 to tdc and lined up distributor at nmbr 8 but still wont run

Wow this is personal If you want to get timing to # 1 remove the spark plug from ! and be careful Put you finger over the hole and bump it over till you get the compression stroke then bring te timing mark to zero and check the relationship to the dist cap move it by removing it and bumping it to get the oil pump to let it drop. Sorry, old school!

to get it right it needs to be set with the proper scan tool via the camshaft retard. But it should at least run if you get it close
