im pretty sure it leaves a gap that unfiltered air can get in and if theres dirt in the air then yea it can hurt the motor
This was a standard thing to do on carberated engines to get more airflow. It won't directly hurt the engine, but it might allow more junk in. You woud be better off buying a high flow air filter system for a newer engine.
As long as you leave the filter under the lid there is no place for the dirt to get through so yes its ok but you will probably have to bend the lid where the wing nut goes bc the bolt may not be long enough

thats an old performance mith. it doesnt work. youll just get more crap going in.
I wouldn't say its a myth. It wouldn't help some of the new air systems, but back when all the air was being pulled through small hole their would have been a difference. It also made the engine sound better for cars that did not have loud exhausts. That being said, it still would have been better to run an open air element type system.
