What Engine? We need to further define "won't start". Does it sound like the Battery is dead....like...you turn the key to start her up and ...nothing....just a click? OR.....the Engine CRANKS over fine...but...she will not FIRE UP...Start?

We have a 2004 Camry and out of the blue, it would not start. No clicking, nothing when the ignition key would turn. The battery checked out fine and the alternator and starter were new in the past year. Turned out the cause was a worn-out neutral safety switch. The contacts were worn not allowing electrical current to reach the starter when the ignition key was turned.

Thanks for this most valuable info. I assume your vehicle has an automatic transmission? Interesting.

Yes, I forgot to mention the Camry is an automatic transmission model and has 170,000 miles. It is actually my girlfriend's car and it had been working great up until the incident where it suddenly wouldn't start. To give a more detailed description, besides no sound at all when the key was turned, the lights and accessories all continued to work, and the battery testing showed normal voltage. At the moment the no-start happened, I should have better remembered my experience years ago with my 1989 Cherokee with 200,000 miles on it that had similar symptoms and in that instance, it was a worn-out neutral start switch as well. Sometimes if you move the shifter to Neutral, the vehicle will start. I forgot that part and, while I did move the shifter through all the positions and that back to Park before I tried the key again, I should have also tried starting it in Neutral. That worked with my Jeep and I see that other car owners have temporarily started their vehicles like that when a bad neutral safety switch is suspected.
