2000 Toyota Avalon speed sensitive humming sound.

Asked by Kelly Jan 21, 2019 at 11:02 PM about the 2000 Toyota Avalon

Question type: General

2000 Toyota Avalon. 180K miles. There is a Speed sensitive vibration which
occurs. It is an obvious humming sound. Usually around 40-60 mph. Nothing
at lower speeds and the sound disappears at higher speeds. The hum varies
with speed and road conditions. There is no obvious car or steering wheel
vibration. The problem was noticed before new tires and brakes were
installed, which had no effect. Wheel bearings were checked, and they are
said to be OK.

Turned out that a piece of plastic was vibrating in the front bottom of the car at particular speeds. The plastic piece didn't seem to be mounted firmly or was missing a mounting piece, so the plastic piece was removed and the problem disappeared. We took it in to a transmission place to just make sure it wasn't the transmission and were very clear about the problem. The transmission guy figured it out so we had him do a service on the transmission as a thank you. (It did need the transmission fluid and filter replacement.)
