I want to load up on slate in the national forest (with permit) and can take out 1000 pounds...would that be too much for the truck or would I be better off taking to 500lb trips?

It depends on what model you have. The majority of them have a max payload of 1600, but some go up to 2000pds. You are fine to haul 1000pds. check the specs tab at the top of the page, it will take you to vehicle specs and you can see exactly what your truck can haul. best of luck.
Can tow 550 pounds in the bed of a 2001 toyota tacoma with a 4 cylinder? What is the max weight?
Tow or haul? Either way 550 pounds is easy with a 4 cylinder.
I loaded a pallet of marble on my truck last night, weighs 2500lbs. It didn't hurt it.
