cause of white smoke emmission
White smoke is usually oil, black smoke unburned fuel, I don't mean to contradict Tom, but this I know. Tom is correct in my opinion about the head gasket although.
amended answer: not only head gasket but piston ring(s) cracked or broken. Check and see if you have oil in your radiator coolant, it will be brown (unless you have that brown-red coolant), and will feel slimy, for lack of a better word, overfull in the "puke tank", the coolant reservoir outside the radiator, and be sure to do this check with the engine cold. Don't pop the rad cap on a hot engine, hot meaning regular operating temp) and /or pull the crankcase dipstick and see if it's got water (coolant) in it, if so be prepared to spend some money
