after adding brake fluid how long should it take for the brake light on the dash to go off

are you sure the light is related to low fluid? could your emergency brake be engaged just a bit? that will make the light come on?

To cover all the bases, if you don't see any puddles under the car, pull a tire off from each end and inspect your pads and drums. I have had the light come on due to very low usable pad left. It will get so low on either side that it will actually lower the fluid level enough to make the light come on.
