Question type: Car Customization

I have a straight 6 53 Bel Air and I am looking to change the transmission to the
powerglide automatic from 3 on the tree manual for two reasons, one the car is
heavy and clutches burn out due to the steep hills and continual stops, and for
two my wife could drive it too. I am needing to replace the clutch soon and was
considering replacing the transmission with an automatic one. Is this possible
and is difficult or really costly? any advice please...

It is possible, the part you may (or may not) depending on where you are is finding a transmission that fits. What size engine is it?
