what size engine come in the 1963 bel air

Hi ddu! This is surprising difficult to answer ... Here's a site to decoding your VIN# (http://www.yearone.com/updatedsinglepages/Id_info/Impala/fullszvinplts.html) ... It shows that if your 2nd and 3rd digits are 15 it came with an L6 and if they are 16 it came with a V8. I know some were produced with a 425hp 409 (Yikes). I also know they were offered with a 3.8 L6 (230), a 4.6 (283) and 5.4 (327) V8, as well as the 6.7 (409) V8 noted above ... Here's a site with some more info for you ... Hope it helps! http://www.histomobile.com/1/Chevrolet/1962/Bel_Air_.htm?lan=1
the vin does not decode the engine , you would have to go by trim and options on that car. most came with a 283 or L6. the 409 only came with a manual tranny & not on a four door.
I had a 63 impala SS convertible in 5he day. It had a 327 four barrel in it. It was my high school car I graduated in 1972.
I am repairing a 1961 bel air .What is a good engine to put in it
Right now the engine in it is a straight 6 should I rebuild that or put something else
You could rebuild the original engine or upgrade for more power. I am a purist so I would rebuild the 6.
The next best thing would be a date correct 283 SBC or a 348/409. Most people would drop in a 350.
