What could be causing it to not crank and backfire?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I need answers! I have a 1987 Toyota Corolla. I have replaced spark plugs, fuel pump, cleaned gas tank, and cleaned carburetor. It still won't crank. Also it shakes when it gets cranked and backfires!

I'm not familiar with the Toyota engines, but it sounds as if you have and ignition timing issue. It will most likely be the timing is off, or the timing chain or gears need replacing. You didn't say how many miles are on the car, but if it is excessive I would certainly look at the chain and or gears.

Thank you I will look into that. My issues start because it has not been driven in two years. Since it has been sitting up for so long there could be numerous things wrong. If I find out what it is I will post it just in case someone else ends up with same problem.

pull the timing cover off and look at the timing marks...note the tension of the timing belt tensioner....there is a chance that you've skipped a tooth~
