I am interested in which systems in the 1986 Tercel SR5 have commonly needed repair.    This particular car has had a valve job and new head gasket;  how many more miles can I expect to get?

Hey jude-- The 1986 Toyota Tercel has quite a few fans, from what I can see. Of course any car that is over 20 years old will need some tender loving care. Parts will need to be replaced as they wear out, but repairs are not as expensive with this car as with some others. Overall this is probably a good car to own in that price range.
