Engine Surging

check these things out; Make sure fuel isn't old try filling tank with fresh fuel. (If the car has sat awhile the fuel could have some moisture or other contaminants in it) Air filter Fuel Filter Spark plugs (make sure they are gapped correctly if they look fine) Spark Plug Wires Cap & Rotor Poorly working fuel pump Vaccuum leak somewhere Carb dirty or malfunctioning If everything else checks out it could be bad compression in which case .............

The air idle control valve needle and seat are gunked up. Remove the steel fuel line. Remove the throttle body. Mark and remove the water and vacuum hose(s). Gently remove the end plate on the air idle control valve. The removal of the needle seat requires a special tool but, a large screwdriver will work. It might take some gentle back and forth pressure to get the seat free. Remove the spring and needle. Clean thoroughly with solvent(seat threads with a brush).In case your tags fell off, the hose coming out from behind the thermostat goes to the rear of the valve. In the case of a stick trans, it does not matter as to the position of the vacuum lines.Reassembly with new throttle body gasket(available at any parts store) and torque throttle body and fuel line to factory specs.
