can a sepertine belt on a 87 blazer stop the truck from cranking

Asked by minmary Dec 26, 2007 at 06:13 PM about the 1987 Chevrolet Blazer

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My son has a 87 blazer which he let set up for 4 months he would start it once every month maybe.  So on today he said the battery was dead bought a used one, i kept telling him the one he had only needed charging. anyway then i noticed the serpentine belt was just off, just hanging inside the motor.  so now he bought a screw to secure the belt and the truck still will not start what is wrong.

Vehicle will only run without the serp belt until the battery dies. Serp belt controls the alternator which runs the vehicle once initial start-up is complete. Many vehicles have alternators which will not charge in the event that input battery voltage is not 12 volts or higher -- so a dead or low charge battery would not start the vehicle or charge itself. Need more information, put a new battery in and secure the serpentine belt properly and post the results.
