my 1970 chevy will run then stop starting. When it does run the my volt meter gets very hot while testing voltage

battery and alternator check out ok. I have to jump start the car. it will run fine ,I
can turn it off and on a few times ,maybe even let it sit awhile and it will
start.Then comes the time when I get nothing,not even a click. all the while
testing the voltage of the battery my volt meter gets extremly hot, and shows no
reading.

Its the distributor cap. Swap that out, and possible your spark plug cables and it should correct the issue. Best of luck!
