I got my 1972 Impala to crank, whenever I
take my foot off of the gas pedal it turns off
immediately, I also her an air type of noise
coming from the driver side of the car
when I give it gas. I don't know what it is!?
As long as my foot is on the gas pedal it

check the vacuum hoses and the big one that does to the power booster/brakes top left drivers side..

That "air type of noise" is almost certainly a vacuum leak. Sometimes if feel around a hose you'll hear the sound of sucking air change.

The thing is, the car doesn't stay on unless my foot is on the gas so how can I check it?

If you have power brakes disconnect the hose from the power booster and connect a vacuum gauge to the hose. Put the gauge on the windshield facing inwards and you can read it from inside. Vacuum gauge should read between 18 and 22 lbs.
