Where can I get casting numbers from for 400 small block chevy?

I got a guy willing to sell me a 400 small block but I want know without a doubt that it is a
400 and I want to know exactly what it came out of originally. Anybody know what casting
numbers I should be looking for on the block and/or where I can find info on casting
numbers and other block identification methods? Thnx
