Spay some starting fluid into the carb and turn it over. If it fires up for a couple of seconds, you have a fuel delivery issue. If it doesn't fire up at all with starting fluid, you have a spark issue. Pull a wire and see if you have any spark at all. If not, you may have a bad coil. Post back with results.

when you say it stops trying to start or you quit trying? if its the car and your sure its not the battery ? in the past when you start it do you have to pump the gas pedal? next time after making sure you have gas and you go to start it try pushing gas pedal all way to the floor as you start it .
