The switch is bad. My '78 has done that very same thing about 3 times over the years. A new switch under the pedal should solve this.

What are the chances that the switch is out of adjustment? Make sure the the brake pedal arm is closing the switch and turning the brake lights off.

There is no adjustment. Closing the switch turns the Brake Lights on. The only other thing to check out (if a new switch doesn't work) is the Turn Signal Switch since your Brake Lights, Turn Signals, and Hazard Flashers all run through there.

in 1978 F100-F250 the fuse panel has a 20A fuse, which controls the hazards and break lamps. it is the smaller fuse on the bottom left of the panel. Swap it out and it may work? The only other issue could be the brake lamp switch, which may need adjusting. Best of luck!
