Well how big is the engine, I'm running a 5.4 Liter in my 1998 F-150 with no problems at all, it has 151000 miles and hasnt missed a beat. However the problem with the 80's and 90's is its all 1970's technology so it can be a little rough. Take it to be looked at my a Ford mechanic before you buy it. It will tow a Horse trailer, I pull a 4 horse trailer with mine, and our 1989 pulls a 3 no problem fully loaded. You should be just fine.
