Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just acquired a 1985 F150 2WD, the problem I am having is that the engine is very hard to turn over, sounds like it wants to start but don't for at least 3-5 minutes. Also when I finally get her going she dies under load, mainly on hills and inclines, stop lights, engine sputters then dies repeatedly. Living in E. Tennessee this is a HUGE problem.

As I said I just got this beast....I don't have much info on it....from what I said maybe its a commomn problem/fix that someone can recognize and lend advice on.
I know its not much info to go by but any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

try checking for a vacuume leak [take off the breather and take a rag and ball it up then slowly try to block air intake] if idel picks up you have a vacuume leak. if it does pick up take off rag and spray base of carb and intake with carb cleaner to find out where vacuume leak is. does it start right up if you pour gas in carb?
