Happened to our Avalanche once. A wire was chaffing and causing a short preventing a solenoid from activating the transmission, making the vehicle stuck in 3rd gear and unable to shift. But really could be a lot of things. Need more info. Sounds, smells, smokes, anything like that. how does it drive at high/low speed, is the problem worse or better?

could be a worn out motor if it needs rings or gaskets or a full rebuild it can be like that. I had a 88 F150 with 365K miles and there was nothing wrong with it, just lacked power. After a full rebuild she had all the power I remember then some.
