Correct sending unit for gas tank

Asked by geoprr Feb 25, 2017 at 05:44 PM about the 1987 Ford F-150

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1987 F-150 with a 351cid engine.  It is NOT fuel injected - it has a
carburetor.  It is 2wd.  The sending unit on the front 19 gal steel tank failed.  I
cannot find the correct replacement sending unit.  The old one has ONE line out,
not one out and one in for venting.  The plug is two-wire.  Where can I find a
unit?  I have had no luck with the usual suspects (Advance Auto, Autozone,
NAPA, LMC Truck, etc.

Check this sight out and see if you see the right one..... https://www.carid.com/replace/fuel-pump-and-sender-assembly-mpn-fmd010495.html?singleid=100125629&url=812028

Sorry, wrong unit. The one you referred me to has two outlet lines (not one) and appears to have a 4 wire plug, for a fuel pump. My truck has a mechanical fuel pump on the engine block, nothing in the gas tank. Appreciate your interest. George

Never found the correct one. Found an Econoline unit that worked after reversing the wires (it showed full when empty, and vice-versa). Cost me several hundred dollars. My shop found it in Tennessee somewhere, but I think it was a one-shot. Search for an Econoline unit that matches your engine and mechanical fuel pump, and good luck.
