courtesy of mike v.____if you determine what series engine you have now, and replace it with the same series it is much easier than trying to swap the engine mounts, trans mounts and so forth. for instance. a lot of 70 fords had 390s in them. if you change to a 351 you will have to change a lot of parts. but another 390 or a 428 will be a direct bolt in. the 460 and 429s are not interchangeable with the other ford engines. but they are some of the best ford built for a truck.they change with the 351 and 400 m series which were some of the worst. study a little about them before you jump into it.they made the c-6 transmissions for all of them, and it is also fords best i had a 79 ford F-250 with a 460 that ran very strong and got 12.5 miles per gallon towing a 6000 pound trailer Source(s): mike v. mechanic since 1979
