how can an engine turn over without the key in ignition

Asked by kleebird May 26, 2016 at 11:01 AM about the 1966 Ford Thunderbird

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

just restored a 66 landau. had trouble cranking at first from a bad solenoid and poor negative cable ground. Now engine cranks and doesn't stop even if key is out of ignition. Only stops if battery is disconnected. What is wrong. Bad ignition switch?

this is the second solenoid that has gone bad trying to start the car. what else is wrong? is something else shorted out?

ok will try that. The battery and cables are new and in good condition but area it is bolted is pretty rusted. May be contributing.
