How do i hook up alternator with inside regulate to my 69 Thunderbird?

I changed the alternator with the outside regulator for one with an inside one. The ad said
that they could be exchanger, however i haven't been able to get the alternator to charge. i
hooked up the battery wire then as before then the post that says STA to the connection
that the old regulator was plugged into and hooked up the ground wire, then i started car
and removed battery post and car cut off.
