Newbie Needing Help With a '73 Thunderbird

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I've just purchased a 1973 Ford Thunderbird and I know nothing about
classic vehicles, so I'm out of my league. The engine (7.5 L 460 V8) hasn't
run in about 4 years, so I need help with figuring out how to fix the old girl up.
I have no knowledge of how to check what needs to be replaced, where
specific parts are located, and how much it would cost. RWD, Automatic, has
pretty much every feature that was offered in 73 when it was built. If there's
any advice you can give me, tips on where to start at bringing it back to the
land of the living, it'd be greatly appreciated.

This is a labour of love, I intend to restore it and keep it. I understand that it is not a desired car, however it is desired by me. The body itself is in good shape except for the rear right opera window area and the rear passenger side floor panel. Upholstery and the majority of interior is original and in very good condition. The few problems I've found have to do with easily accessible parts like a carburetor. Initial estimates are around $6000, most likely more.

If the car has been sitting a long time the fuel system will have to be cleaned out and the carburetor rebuilt. I would also completely go through the brake system for safety.

Not sure where you are located, but you can call Jim's T-Birds in North Carolina. He may have some parts that you need and he is very knowledgable and resourceful.
