Hello tlay1-- Nobody said that it was going to be easy. When you work on any engine you are going to find some tight spots and that is true with your 1983 Honda Civic too. Take a look at the following site for diagrams which might help you. Click on the diagrams and they will expand to a full-page view. No special tool is required. Go to-- http://autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/1c/a5/25/0900823d801ca525/repairInfoPages.htm. Good luck from Bovan.

Hello all. I had the same problem; took me several hours until I realized that the bottom bolt threads in from the engine side, instead of from the starter side. The bolt is hard to find because it is "around the corner", so to speak, instead of being on the starter itself. All that is on the starter is the threaded hole into which the bolt goes!

My dad and I are having serious trouble removing the bolt that is "around the corner." We can't really even find it, and we've been working at it for hours.Tips? Photos?
