to do it right, absolutely right- it is your daughter, after all- I would change the entire drivetrain- engine, tranny, and rear end, along with all mounts- a brake upgrade would be good, too- and something that drives more modern- basically, a "retro-mod"- this will cost a ton of money- if she has to have a cool old classic to drive around, why not save a lot of trouble, time, money, and depreciation of changing original equipment on a rare 4-speed Mustang- and just teach her to drive a standard? I'm confused- these are old cars, and not as safe as modern cars- she should learn to handle the classic, safely, be a better driver-

I agree with jamnblues plus the ability to drive a stick could be a life saving asset!

to answer your question, you could do the swap to an auto for under $2000. you need to find a trans, and shifter, and you will probably have to change out the driveshaft.
