Ticking sound
Asked by BimmerboyRI May 04, 2010 at 10:35 PM about the 2004 BMW Z4
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 2004 Z4 and at start off and under acceleration i here this ticking sound. The dealer says there is nothing wrong with the car. I am obsessive and the sound worries me. It sounds like it could be the vents or the air intake, you do not hear it at idle only when accelerating. Anyone ever encounter this? Its like baseball cards in bicycle spokes, if any of you know what I mean by that...lol

ya but not an 04.it has the m-54 right?try bleeding the lifters.check oil level to.are you using th 5w30bmw oil?although if it were lifters you would hear it at idle.is it worse when cold?or go away when warm?
this one surely looks tricky to me. don't wanna give wrong suggestions. so would suggest, take it to a dealer. http://z4bmw.org/
Typical bmw tho not so much with the m series but occasionally theres ticking noise of some sort, valve tap, light but there. Number of causes . Its internal. Usually over 100k miles .. Check for stretched T chain n since u r there change the vano seals.
It even happens on my Z4, mine its 06 model, I taken it to the dealer and they told me it was the fuel injector. But I think its the hydraulic lifter on the engine since I had them work on it. It seem do it later on throws the end of the week like on a Sunday and early on a Monday.
Low octane fuel will cause such ticking. If you're sure you used the highest octane fuel, ignore me.
I get this too. Clicking sound at low rolling speeds . It goes away for a while when you quickly touch the brake pedal. Reappears after a minute or so driving without touching the brakes. Frequency of the clicks goes with the speed. To me it sounds similar to having something stuck in the tyre tread ( but it's not).
