RPM in 2007 SE Camry V4 goes up or down.

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

While driving my car,  the rpm can drop or rise sharply and fast between 500-1000 rpm so it could be on 2000rpm and directly drop to 1000rpm even when i'm at a constant speed and on a straight road with 0 incline.

It used to go up and down very frequently (every couple of seconds) even when i'm parked, but then I changed the air filter and that problem was gone.
Still I have the current problem I mentioned at first though.

Please help, I think this issue is causing my camry to have a lower mileage than usual.

I would first buy some throttle body cleaner and thoroughly spray down the inside. If you're handy around a car, I would remove the throttle body and tear it down and clean it. But if not, spraying the inside will help. Secondly, I would then remove the Idle Air Control valve and clean that as well. Sometimes just spraying it down will cure the issue. Here is a short video...........https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i82s4ZfR2js Here is a video of a more detailed IAC cleaning...........................https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WsP2-HKz7vE If after cleaning these components and you still have the surging idle, you may have a faulty MAP sensor. That gives you a surging engine and poor performance. If you have the check engine light illuminated, I would have the error codes checked first. Try your local Autozone.

The thing is that before changing the air filter, the check engine light was on, but now there is nothing illuminated and nothing shows on the scanner at the mechanic.

I would try the cleaning spray first. That's the most inexpensive fix. It could be that simple. May be why it's not throwing a code. Just dirty. Not defective. How many miles are on your plugs? Have you done a tune up lately?

I'm not clear as to what this issue is. Are you indicating that this vehicle has a surging problem?(Engine runs erratically)...or...is your tachometer indicating false readings?

Hi Lastchancegarage, no its not just a tachometer false reading, its a surging problem... I haven't got the chance yet to try and spray clean the throttle body and idle air control.

Hi. I have a 2007 Toyota Camry and the problem I have is that when I turn the a/c on the Rpms go down and the Ac fans won't stay on and it blows hot air inside the vehicle.
