2001 ford f 150 xlt 5.4 v8
My truck will start and idle fine, but when I put it in drive
and give it gas it hesitates and dont want to move I can get
it going but it wont go over 40mph anyone have any idea
what causes this?

Check for clogged catalytic converter. Do this test at night start vehicle and let idle for about 5-10 minutes then take a look at the converter if it starts to glow red it is getting clogged.
