Key Stuck

Asked by wherescarl Nov 19, 2008 at 10:55 AM about the 2000 Buick Regal

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

W/ increasing frequency, the key will not release from the ignition switch. Slamming the console shifter back and forth from P to 1st sometimes work, sometimes not.  Dealer says Key Cylinder replacement needed & $450.00 to replace. I think it is the BTSI or some other switch or Solenoid.

Most Internet forums say that too.

If the key does not turn to lock position and there will not come out of the cylinder, then I too believe you may have to change the key lock , that will envole the removeal of the steering wheel . Check with auto parts store for a replacement.

I believe the key itself has a 300 ohm resistor in it. You can have a new key made with the resistor in it at ACE hardware for sbout $55.

It's the shift interlock solenoid that needs replscement. Part is about $80. Labor is free, if you do it. Look up how to replace it on the interwebby.
