Does it make any clicking noise? If it clicks but does not turn over it could be your starter. Check your battery for 12 volts and have a friend check it while you turn the ignition, if it drops lower than 9 volts, get a new battery. If it turns over and makes the whirring noise, you could have engine trouble. If there's no sound at all check your electrical connections.
