what would make my 94 rm sputter then checck engine light come on

Lots of stuff common thing though is a misfire. http:// freeautomechanic.com/ diagnostictroblecodes5.html post the code once you get it, parts store can't help they are dumb and the scanner doesn't work on an obd1.

I would first take a look at your ignition system. (cap/rotor/condition of distributer) Also plugs and your wires. If any of these parts have over 100,000 miles it would be good to replace. The opti spark distributer is located behind the water pump on the front of the engine. The cost of that cap/rotor is high so repacing the complete distributer assy is well worth it because of the trouble of accessing it. . Both of my 96 roadmasters had this issue and it was resolve by replacing the distributer assy and wires.
