What would make the power steering just all of a
sudden stop working

A bad pump or loss of all fluid pressure due to a leak. As you have a serpentine belt, if that had come off you would have seen several other indicators (like battery/charging system light)

And hopefully for you it wasn't the rack that failed. That'll set you back $1,500 clams
