2002 DODGE RAM 1500 RPM JUMPING

Asked by staceyj88 Jul 01, 2009 at 01:06 PM about the 2002 Dodge RAM 1500

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

When drivin at a steady speed, the RPM's sometimes jump for a second then the go back down to normal. I have taken it to Dodge and they say that they can not find anything wrong with it as no errors appear to show up.  I have changed the spark plugs and wires, had the transmission fluid flushed and changed, and replaced hoses that had very small leaks. What is this issue?

Maybe a wire or something in the printed board that feeds the tach. When this "jumps" is there a change in the rpms in the motor that can be heard?

Yes. When the rpms jump, I can feel it in the truck. I stay at the same speed and it feels as though I pushed the gas pedal for a second.

sounds to me like your transmission is trying to kick in and out of over drive or tow , could b a sign that your trany is bout to give way, does it do this when u have it in tow or when u turn ur over drive off

I had tried it a few times before with the over drive off. It did the same thing, but I believe it was only once. It's not constant as it is in overdrive. Then again, I do not drive everywhere with the over drive turned off as it is mostly over 55 mph

Had the same symptom in my 01 for over a year. Drove it over 49K miles that way until it started throwing TCC error codes. Torque Converter clutch was failing. Get it fixed asap. Mine dumped so much clutch material in the trans it had to be rebuilt.

Try new throttle position sensor. Mine was doing same thing and the TPS fixed it.

I have an 06 with the 4.7 and it does the same thing but only when it's in cold weather. I heard it could be the TPS but was gonna see if anyone else had the same problem.

Cars and trucks are just to difficult to maintain, now. Too expensive to maintain. Too difficult to diagnose. You practically have to replace or rebuild everything to fix some simple problem. Just because a transmission slips does not mean its all lost. It can be just about anything else. I've read torque converter, solenoids, filter, band adjustment, low fluid, wrong fluid, governor, spring, sensors, I mean come on.

Mine does exactly the same when in overdrive.I am thinking that it was the accumulator spring broken or wore.I never check it out.I did change governor pressure solenoid but it did the same thing.the tcc could be causing this as well by not locking the torque converter.but if driven at steady speed I can get it to stop doing it.trans tune by deadpan works well to help
